In all the excitement of looking forward to your major holiday how is your packing going? When going overseas it is wise to pack accordingly. Essential travel items can easily be overlooked, it pays to plan and to have a list. That way you can tick off items as they are packed.

Travel documents, toiletries and first aid are the three main travel essentials. Add these to your packing list to get you started.

The point is by taking care of the basics now and taking them with you can save you precious time while you travel. Who wants to spend a day searching for a pharmacy or explaining symptoms to someone that does not speak the language?

First Aid kits are now being produced to cover any type of travel. They come in neat compact kits for all budgets. They are useful to keep at home or in the car.Whatever type of travel you are doing there will be a kit to suit or you can put your own together.

Your basic kit should include the following: Pain relief medication, antiseptic cream, band aids and plasters. Stomach upset remedies and eye drops. Scissors, tweezers and safety pins are usually included. Remember to put your kit in with your main checked luggage. No good having it confiscated by customs before you leave the country!

After your everyday essentials include the following. Medicated wipes, tissues, dental floss or tooth picks. Sun cream, lip balm and body moisturizer if the climate is cold or dry. Emery boards can save annoyance of ragged nails. Insect repellent if traveling outside of cities. Men don’t forget your razor!

You should take enough of your current medication for the duration of the trip and then some. Not all countries have the same pharmaceuticals and you may find it very difficult to get a prescription filled in a foreign country. Be prepared.

Essential documents include copies of your itinerary. Copy of your passport and copy of your travel insurance details. You should also carry information on you at all times of next of kin or who to inform in an emergency. This is essential if you are traveling alone.

With a little planning and a few extra items be confident that you have everything you need to enjoy your adventure. Bon Voyage!

Medical expenses rise yearly. It can become a huge burden, especially when you’re visiting a foreign country. Whether you are traveling to the US for vacation or business, you need to have “visitor medical insurance”.

The chances of risks covered by visitor’s health insurance differ from plan to plan. It is obvious that you will be confused while buying the policies. Whatever may be your needs, you have to consider some points which are common amongst all the policies. Therefore consider these points before buying any policy -

Insurance company’s reputation

This is a critical element you should research in order to get yourself insured correctly. In the case of a serious medical issue, you don’t want to deal with an insurance company that fights you rather than helps you. You should choose in by a policy from a trusted insurance company.

In order to find the company’s reputation, you can visit the websites of rating companies. Rating companies are independent bodies which do fair judgment and provide ratings to the insurance companies. One example of a rating company is A.M. Best rating.

Use the Internet to get more detailed information

If you are not sure about the correct place to find out information about the company, you can directly go to the company’s website. Every piece of information is written in different sections which are easy to find out.

There’s a saying in the fitness industry: “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet.” So no matter how often you hit the hotel gym (and not many travelers do at all), you won’t be able to fight off weight gain if you continue to down processed foods and sugary beverages.

On a recent flight from Nashville to Toronto, I sat beside an overweight women who was (ironically) reading Dr. Phil’s book on how to lose weight while she drank a glass of orange juice.
Now she clearly did not need the orange juice. She could have had water or a club soda (like I did) or even a coffee. Instead, she chose just about the worst drink possible. Within minutes of drinking orange juice, blood sugar levels spike, increasing levels of the fat-storing hormone insulin. To make matters worse, those spiked blood sugar levels eventually crash - making you hungry again.

Bad food choices doom travelers to stay overweight forever. But if you pack your own snacks - and ask for healthy substitutions in restaurants (replacing potatoes with extra veggies, for example) - you can control what you eat. Kelley Herring has written extensively about healthy food options. If you need some inspiration for what to eat while traveling, check out some of her past ETR articles.

2. Schedule your workouts with as much dedication as you schedule your business meetings.

When you book your hotel, make sure you have access to an adequate hotel gym or nearby fitness establishment. That way, you can continue with your regular exercise routine.

You might want to purchase a day pass at a local gym and work out with a personal trainer. If there is no time to schedule a session with a personal trainer, and your hotel gym doesn’t have weights, try a bodyweight-only workout.

Here, for example, is how to do the Off-Set Push-Up:

Start in a regular push-up position, with one exception. You move one hand a hand’s-length forward. (So it will be at forehead level, not shoulder level.) Do half as many push-ups as you normally do. Then, without resting, switch your hand position so the other hand is now a hand’s-length forward. Do an equal number of repetitions.

This push-up works your upper body just as hard as (or harder than) regular push-ups. But it also works your abdominals a lot harder, because your torso muscles are working harder to stabilize your upper body.

Take advantage of whatever time slot is available for exercise during your travels. And don’t miss it. An added bonus: Your exercise appointment can be the perfect excuse to skip unnecessary post-meeting cocktails and calories. Which brings me to my next tip…

3. Stay away from alcohol.

Whether you’re on vacation or traveling for business, cocktails and wine are usually bountiful. But boozing it up adds hundreds of unnecessary calories. Plus, a few drinks can lead you to indulge in high-fat, high-glycemic foods you would ordinarily avoid. As a group of Canadian researchers reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, just one alcoholic drink can have that effect on your diet.

4. Spend waiting time walking.

If you have a layover between flights or are killing time between meetings, take a brisk walk. Some people think that walking is so low-intensity it doesn’t do anything to help keep you fit. But that’s just plain wrong. Researchers from Duke University found that walking the equivalent of 11 miles per week helped prevent the accumulation of deadly visceral fat, no matter the intensity of the exercise. So take a pedometer with you when you travel, and walk as often as possible.

Travel with a “maintenance mindset.” Stick to your plan, and you’ll return home without gaining any fat or losing any fitness.

You have high hopes for a great vacation but after a few days sight seeing and sitting on the beach you want more. How do you find those secret locations that aren’t well publicized but are tons of fun? Ask the local residents!
You would be surprised at the places to visit and things to do that aren’t in the travel brochure. Ask the taxi driver, ask the person at the hotel front desk, ask the waiter at the restaurant where you are having lunch what they do for fun in their time off. Chances are they will be able to give you some insight on what to see in the local area. We were very lucky when we visited Kaua, Hawaii last year. The concierge at the hotel was more than generous with local hot spots and we had a blast exploring the beaches and mountains of the island. We found a very remote beach where the scuba diving was amazing and there were only a handful of people.

Make sure to ask about local dining as well. We are pretty low maintenance when it comes to eating out so we try to visit the places that the local residents eat since the prices are usually reasonable and the food is great. We found that by eating at restaurants that cater to the locals you get a more diverse menu as well.

Never be afraid to ask the locals what they do for fun as you may be pleasantly surprised.
